Keeping accurate financial records is essential for any successful business; however, many small business owners are often too busy running the day-to-day operations they tend not to devote the necessary attention to bookkeeping. Some fail to record financial transactions properly and in a timely manner. Some ignore it completely until tax time.

This workshop will help you identify your bookkeeping needs and resources. In this hands-on introductory workshop you will learn:

  • the need or purpose of bookkeeping 
  • bookkeeping and accounting terms 
  • recognition and use of bookkeeping records and reports 
  • learning/understanding the process of entering transactions 
  • learning/understanding the posting of information to the reports

Hazel Howland

After receiving a diploma in Business with a major in Accounting from NBCC in 1980, Hazel embarked on a diverse and impactful career. She began her professional journey in Calgary, working with a corporate bank for three years before transitioning to Norcen Energy as an internal auditor. Her role expanded when Norcen acquired Superior Propane, prompting a move to New Brunswick where she served as Branch Auditor for the Atlantic region. Seeking stability after six years of extensive national travel, she settled into a bookkeeping position in Fredericton. In 1994, she started her own business, providing bookkeeping services to various clients in the Fredericton area. The following year, she completed a one-year Management Development course with UNB and became the initial bookkeeper for LearnSphere Canada, retiring from her outsourced position as Controller in 2021. Her clients have included business training entities, legal firms, charities, non-profit corporations, small businesses, and solo entrepreneurs. She has also been deeply committed to volunteering, participating on Credit Union boards and committees and mentoring youth and new entrepreneurs.
